About the Project & Background
The South Africa based charity Education Africa runs a Social Architecture Project that aims at building affordable education facilities in the impoverished regions of South Africa. Students of architecture from international Universities come to South Africa to design and construct pre schools, skills centres and facilities for the disabled. Only simple and inexpensive materials are used and unemployed local residents assist the students, encouraging the important transfer of skills and knowledge. The project also works as an enabler to social tourism in disadvantaged communities.
During 2010 Education Africa re-collaborated with the the University of Nottingham Built Environment Department and established connections with the community in the township of Calais, in the North East region of South Africa near the Zimbabwe border. The University of Nottingham Built Environment Department have been working to build a nursery school to accommodate 80 new born to 6 year old children in the Calais township.
The University of Nottingham will be working with Education Africa and ARUP in facilitating this project to make our designs a reality. The project will be looking to develop the existing social infrastructure in Calais, Limpopo, and expand its functional and social potential with the nursery school also acting as a community centre.
